After serious contemplation of canceling out any sort of recording career, Hyena (Or as Onry Ozzborn once called him, "Oldominion's secret weapon") was suddenly brought into the Oldominion fold in the summer of 1999.
He first publicly appeared on Onry Ozzborn's "Owleye" album. His musical influences range from Boogie Down Productions to Godspeed, You Black Emperor. Henryk
Goreki to Hunter S. Thompson.
It wasn't until the Lamens Terms album (a group Hyena, Onry, and Smoke M2D6 formed) that people started to take notice. But it wasn't until the winter 2000 sessions for Inhalant (a group Barfly, PG13, and Hyena formed) that some reinvention of Hyena began. Some have said Hyena is an utter genius. Others have said his complete incompetence to create one simple coherent sentence, makes him candidate for one of the worst artists to have ever picked up a microphone.
Hyena is borderline obsessive about how he writes and records anything he does or is apart of: "I always want to make sure something I record now, I can still feel good about listening to in ten years. This is why I don’t normally write to beats. It's a curse though as well, because my cadences come out too simple." The visuals and delivery he presents have been known to make a listener or two uncomfortable. Or have bored them to death. (Come on, swing states!)
Once Hyena quits being lazy and complacent (he is the new Large Professor. How long have we been waiting for that album?), you will be able for hear an assortment of full lengths and EP's from this mellow - dramatic - (He did coin the phrase "wristbath." What else do you call someone like that?) Hero to some - coward to others - an enigma, who will no doubt impact the Oldominion sound.
