Building wings on the way down.
That’s the title of JFK’s premiere solo album. Do I still need to convince you to hear his music?
Fine.
This largely biographical and introspective collection is an abrasive testament of this mans journey from the criminal lifestyle he was trapped in and the dead end kids He was surrounded by in the streets of Virginia Beach to his rebirth as a member of the oldominion crew in Seattle Washington.
JFK is at once obviously doing music not because he wants to but because he has to. He finds the opportunity to express himself irresistible and it comes across in the desperation of his delivery. Lyrically he is able to put the listener right in his shoes.
If you can define someone by the company they keep, then it should be noted that JFK has recorded with such new millennium rap acts as Cannibal Ox and Typical Cats as well as done extensive touring and sharing stages with everyone from Aesop Rock to De La Soul to blah blah blah….word perfect. His live show is perhaps his most valuable asset.
“Yo ! Remember the first time you heard JFK?” Yup there’s going to be a lot of that sort of thing in the years to come…
